Lunch, Or Something Like It
by Merith

The wind was blowing in rapid-fire gusts, nearly knocking him from his feet as he ran from the dorm to the Prescott Building. They were working at the computer lab that day, and Quatre couldn't be happier. Lectures given by the quantitative macroeconomics professor were enough to make the most stalwart snooze.

His project partner was already a the terminal. As he slid into his seat, Quatre heard the song Duo hummed as if to himself, but didn't say a word. Instead, he pulled the portfolio he'd been working on from his bag, and began pointing out updates to their presentation for Duo to make.

Their lab hour was nearly over and still, whenever he was concentrating on changes or researching data, Duo would hum under his breath. Quatre tried to ignore his friend's good mood, working on through the slight distraction. Finally, after finding that he was humming the same tune, Quatre turned to Duo.

"How's Heero these days? Haven't seen much of him lately."

Without looking up from the text he held in his lap, Duo replied, "He's fine. We ate lunch together today."

"Is that why you're in such a good mood?" Quatre bumped his shoulder into Duo's.

Duo smiled wide, flashing a glance at Quatre. "You better believe it."

It was a glimpse only, but Quatre's smile faltered. He stopped Duo from turning away and peered a little closer. Drawing back quickly, he tried to stifle what suspiciously would have been the giggles. Duo wasn't smiling any longer; he was frowning.

"What's up with you, man? I got spinach between my teeth or something?"

Taking a gulping breath, Quatre forced the laugh away. "No... not quite." He turned away to stare at the monitor. "What did you eat for lunch, anyway?"

The motion was slight, but Quare saw it from the corner of his eye. Duo was running his tongue over his teeth. The jerking movement, he couldn't help but notice.

"Uh, Heero and I... uh... I'll be right back." Duo was on his feet, heading for the door with a hand over his mouth.

Quatre gave into laughter, tried to keep it quiet and failed; the glares from the other students was worth it. Leaning back in his chair, Quatre wondered what Trowa was doing for lunch the next day, and if he'd be interested in a little snack afterwards.

Only, he would make sure tell-tale evidence wouldn't remain behind.
