the duel: 1X2 fires !!!

The Calm Before the Storm
A Family List Ficcie
by Caroline

All was calm on the battle front. Chibi Shi-chan looked out one of the highest windows of the 1x2 fort, using binoculars to spy on the crumbling towers of the 2x1 fort across the way.

"How goes it, CSC?" a little snow-bat chirped from the rafters above.

"It's been quiet for days," CSC murmured, scanning the outside world with her binoculars.

"A little too quiet I think," Jana added as she entered the room, carrying a plate of milk and cookies. "Stormy sent these up... something about saying sorry for not getting them the last time."

"Oooh, cookies!" CSC bounced away from the window and grabbed a handful of cookies, stuffing them into her mouth. Noticing the stares the others in the room were giving her, she swallowed. "What? I didn't get many last time because I was telling the story."

SnowTigra sweatdropped and took up her comrade's post at the window. "You think the duel is over?"

"I don't know," Jana replied, trying to swipe a cookie for herself and not having much luck. "Who threw the last attack?"

Blank stares were shared all around. CSC, mouth full of cookies, bounced over to the nearest computer terminal and started pointing and clicking. "Drat! The last attack came on Saturday with that funny yet delicious pic of Lady Tora's."

"Oooh, yeah," SnowTigra said. "It landed on our satellite dish, remember? We were without our 24 hour bishie boy hentai channel for two days."

The girls in the room collectively shuddered.

"We can't let them get away with it," CSC said, an evil gleam in her eye. "We must strike back." She looked at her friends. "Anyone have any ammo left?"

"Don't look at me," Jana remarked. "I already sent one fic out today."

"And you didn't make it part of the duel? Are you nuts? Do you want to let them win?"

Jana sweatdropped. "Maybe one of the other girls has something."

At that moment, the author decided a deus ex machina (the plot device, not the author) was needed and sent ClarySage scurrying into the room.

"Minna, you should come look at this!"

The members of the 1x2 faction trooped out of the room and followed ClarySage down a flight of stairs.

"Clary, what is it?" Jana asked, still trying to grab a cookie from the plate CSC has holding protectively against her chest.

"Something's wrong with Caroline."

"Eh??"

ClarySage led them to the lowest levels of the fort. The corridor was dark and SnowTigra was sure she could hear little creatures scurrying about. There was a door at the far end of the hallway. ClarySage pushed it open and the other girls peered over her shoulder to look inside.

At the far end of the room was a ragged figure hunched over what appeared to be a keyboard. Her long hair was dingy and matted. The girl was rocking back and forth, cackling to herself.

The girls in the doorway all turned to look at Jana.

"What?" the list-mistress asked innocently.

"You invited her here. You find out what's wrong," the snow-bat replied.

Jana rolled her eyes and stepped cautiously into the room. "Um, Caro- chan? Is everything okay?"

An insane laugh answered her. "They think they've won. They think they've had the last word. Well, I'll show them. I'll show them all!"

ClarySage stepped in behind Jana. "Caroline? What are you planning to do?"

The girl looked up and gave a wicked little grin. "The 2x1 fort has one turret left standing. I will not rest until I bring it down!"

The other girls, sensing that the figure crouching over the keyboard wasn't entirely sane, began backing up. "Uhhh... well good luck then."

Another cackle answered them. "I'm not the one who will need the luck. Only a few more pages to edit, then... KAAAABLOOOOOOIE!!!!"

"Wellyouletusknowifyouneedanything," Jana said in a rush, motioning for the others to get out of the room. The 1x2 girls hurried outside, slamming the door behind them. They ran up the stairs and into the warm sunlight as fast as their little legs (or in SnowTigra's case, wings) could carry them. When they deemed they were far enough away from the crazy girl in the basement, they collapsed on the ground, breathing hard.

"That was way scary," SnowTigra said.

"Did you see the look in her eyes? She wasn't right in the head," Jana added.

"She's never been fully right in the head, but this time, I think all the fic writing has finally gotten to her," ClarySage said, wishing she had a nice soothing cup of coffee and a cigarette right about now. "I always knew she'd go insane one day."

"Do you think we're safe?" SnowTigra asked.

"Oh, I don't think *we're* the ones who needs to worry," CSC replied, looking fearfully toward the 2x1 fort.

The other girls followed her gaze. "Think we should warn them?" a small voice asked.

CSC started to say yes, but then her eyes fell on an image that hadn't yet been cleaned up after the heaviest fighting of the duel a week before of a naked and sweaty Duo pounding into an equally naked and sweaty Heero. She grinned evilly. "No. I don't think we should warn them at all."

"Oooh, you're so bad," SnowTigra said.

From the distance, an insane laugh could be heard reverberating through the ruined stone walls of the 1x2 fort. The girls on the grass sat back and munched on cookies (having been finally liberated from CSC's clutches) and waited for the fireworks to begin.
